2015 - Several Wins But Mainly Losses For Historic Preservation In Ashland

2015 saw two homes in the Center Street Historic District purchased and in the process of being restored, while Ashland demolished most of it's historic schools, FE Myers factory, and even another house in the Center Street historic district.

308 Center Street

312 Center Street

 An excellent example of Eastlake style architecture with its ornate room trim, this house had no mention made by Mary Brinton Tubbs in her Center Street memoirs of the 1880s, therefore it is assumed that it was built in the 1890s. However, a house owned by a Patterson stood on the lot in 1874. W.A. Beer, a State Representative, lived here at the turn of the century. The home was placed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1992. 

A quick title search of the property at 309 Center St., and it would indicate that there was a house there possibly back to the 1840's or before. The 1874 Ashland City Map shows a house there in the name of "Patterson".

Charles Milton Beer was born in Ashland, Ohio on 7 Oct 1872. Charles married Emma C Myers. He passed away on 26 Jan 1947 in Ashland, Ohio. Emma C. Myers was born in Ashland, Ohio on 14 Sep 1873 to Benjamin Myers and Samantha Cowan. She passed away on 25 Feb 1956 in Ashland, Ohio. Emma grew up across the street in 312 Center Street. Emma's mother, Samantha Cowan, grew up in 414 Center Street, what is now the Ashland County Historical Society's museum. The Charles Beer Home is tied into the history of the other homes and families who built Center Street and made it the textbook of architectural styles it is.

The home was destroyed by Seth Gasche of Denbow-Primm-Kemery Funeral Home, now called Denbow-Gasche Funeral Home.
